The Assertive Educator

The Assertive music educator is motivated by competition, challenges, and achieving high levels of musicianship. They are often described as direct, driven, determined, and out-spoken.

YOUR STRENGTHS AT A GLANCE:

Decisive

Results-Oriented

Competitive

The Assertive educator strives to maintain control, prefers independence, and is results-driven.

When in conflict, the Assertive music educator is quick to speak their mind and act on a possible solution. The Assertive educator may be seen as strict.

The Assertive educator could be improved by practicing patience and empathy, explaining details, and showing sensitivity.

Maximizing Assertive Strengths
in the Classroom

When it comes to maximizing potential, you’ve got what it takes to win big with your students. Here's how to get the most out of your Assertive strengths...

1. Be a Leader, Not a Dictator

You know what it takes to get the job done, just remember that people respect and learn from leaders and they fear and resent dictators. Be sure to use your powers for good by leading by example, motivating with encouragement, and exercising patience when things aren't moving as quickly as you had planned.

2. Share the Stage

Assertive educators tend to want to maintain control of, well, everything. This can be a valuable asset when it comes to staying organized, planning concerts, and keeping rehearsals on track; it can also suck the life out of class for some of your students. Maintain control of what you need to, but give your students some agency from time to time by letting them choose repertoire or warm ups, or even simply the order of the rehearsal schedule.

3. Charisma, the Builder of Programs

Not all charismatic educators are assertive, and not all Assertive educators are charismatic. But Assertive educators are often extroverted (though not always), meaning being around others energizes them, so simply putting a smile on and adding a spoonful of friendliness to your extroverted personality at the very least gives the illusion of charisma, and students LOVE charismatic teachers. Step outside of your classroom from time to time and chat with prospective students in the halls – maybe even invite them to a rehearsal or concert!
